This week has been heavy on my heart. First, it was the hearing for the Stanford rape case and then, right after, the Orlando shooting happened. These two events, so close together, hurt me on a personal and community level. I couldn’t believe what happened and I was at a loss of words until today. I knew I wanted to say something, but I didn’t know what or how to say it until now. These events, the people involved and targeted are the same people who I see at conventions. These same people, whether they are con-goers or not, are in our community, too and we can easily be a target in the future.
Now, I’m not trying to scare everyone and go “We’re not safe! Hide!!” I’m stating the opposite and saying that we need to stand even closer together. We need to let anyone who wants to harm us or anyone like us know that we cannot be broken. They cannot get away with hurting us. And most importantly, if they try to hurt us they will be stopped.
The Stanford Rape case is horrible and Judge Persky should be ashamed of himself and should resign. God forbid he takes on a case where the rape happened at a convention. Our outfits do NOT equal consent. Drunk or sober, our consent can’t be given unless clearly stated.
As a community, we need to be the change we want to see (since clearly they aren’t doing it themselves) and to all of my cross-dressing, transgendered, small-outfit-wearing, gay, lesbian, queer, everyone cosplayers if I see ANYONE trying to harm you I will protect you. I refuse to sit idly by and continue to let things happen.
